MUT RADIO CELEBRATES THE 93rd BIRTHDAY OF PRINCE MANGOSUTHU BUTHELEZI 27 AUGUST 2021

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi celebrated his 93rd birthday on the 27 August 2021. As part of the Celebration MUT Radio dedicated one of programming on the Campus Voice from 4pm to 5pm.

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi is the most senior member of South African Politics. He played a key role in the creating a framework for the South African's democracy.

Mangosuthu Bethulezi was born on 27 August 1928, in Mahlabathini, KwaZulu, to Chief Mathole Buthelezi and Princess Magogo kaDinuzulu, the sister of King Solomon kaDinuzulu, and daughter of King Dinuzulu. He was educated at Impumalanga Primary School, Mahashini, Nongoma from 1933 to 1943, then at Adams College, Amanzimtoti from 1944 to 1947.[3]

Mangosuthu Buthelezi studied at the University of Fort Hare from 1948 to 1950, where he joined the African National Congress Youth League and came into contact with Robert Mugabe and Robert Sobukwe. He was expelled from the university after student boycotts. He later completed his degree at the University of Natal. In 1975, Buthelezi started Inkatha National Cultural Liberation Movement, which later became known as the IFP, Inkatha Freedom Party.

Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi first put forward the idea of establishing a tertiary educational institution specializing in technical subjects in 1974 at a meeting with the Chairperson of Anglo American and De Beers Consolidated Mines. From this proposal, a plot of land was established in Umlazi, South of Durban. Teaching started in 1979. The Technikon moved into its main buildings on their completion in September 1981.

In November 2007, Mangosuthu Technikon was renamed Mangosuthu University of Technology.
